T. Gantner Collection

The Gantner family first purchased 160 acres of land on Spring Mountain in 1941. The property already had a small vineyard, and John Gantner Sr. harvested a variety of grapes and other fruit. He began producing pinot noir in 1956 under the School House label in collaboration with some of the most famous wine makers of the era, starting with John Daniels(Inglenook), Fred McCrea (Stony Hill), Al Brett with Andre Tchelistcheff (Buena Vista Winery), Ric Forman ( Sterling), Mike Chellini (Stony Hill), Jerry Luper with Bo Barrett (Chateau Monthelena), and Bruce Newlan(Newlan Winery) . His three sons, Tony, John and Steve still own property on Langtry and Spring Mountain Road. While John is a full-time resident, Steve divides his time between Washington D.C. and his mountain residence, and Tony between San Francisco and Spring Mountain. Each grow vines and John Gantner produces a limited number of School House wines.
