Although the winery opened in 1997, the roots of this winemaking team can be found in the Folie Douce Restaurant in Arcata launched back in 1991 by the Behrens. After developing a marvelous menu of French cuisine and an outstanding wine list, they took on the challenge of making wine out of their basement of their home in Humboldt County. In 1993, the two couples decided to form a partnership which has survived successfully to this day.
The 1993 inaugural crush was a labor of love, but by 1997 the four decided to leave their day jobs and buy property in Napa Valley. After renting a facility, they decided they wanted a winery of their own, and Spring Mountain found a place in their hearts. In 1999 they constructed the winery and completed the first crush, albeit with an incomplete facility. In the intervening years, two caves have been added and production increased but only to around 1250 cases.
It is the philosophy of the two couples that “you have to have great grapes to make great wine. The primary goal is to coax physiological ripeness, balance and intense flavor out of the grapes just in time for harvest. The winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Petit Verdot.
